What the Foundation?
The foundation is a part of building construction that functions to place the building and carry the load distributed from the upper structure to the ground. The foundation is strong enough to withstand it without the occurrence of differential settlement in the structural system.
To choose an adequate type of foundation, it should be noted whether the foundation is suitable for various conditions in the field and whether the foundation is possible to be economically resolved according to the work schedule.
The following things need to be considered in choosing the type of foundation:
1. State of foundation soil
2. Limits due to construction above (upper structure)
3. The condition of the area around the location
4. Time and cost of work
5. Sturdy, stiff and strong
Generally the condition of the subgrade has a variety of characteristics, various parameters that affect the characteristics of the soil, among others, the influence of the groundwater results in the weight of the volume of soil submerged in water different from the soil not submerged in water even though the soil type is the same.
The types of soil with physical and mechanical characteristics each provide strong values supporting different soils. Thus the selection of the type of foundation to be used must be adjusted to various aspects of the land at the location where the building will be built.
A foundation must be planned properly, because if the foundation is not planned properly there will be a part that has a greater decline than the surrounding part.
There are three criteria that must be met in planning a foundation, namely:
1. The foundation must be placed appropriately, so as not to landslide due to external influences.
2. The foundation must be safe from the landslide of carrying capacity.
3. The foundation must be safe from excessive decline.
